Scalable Controllers for Single Genset to Microgrid Solutions
5/13/2024
Caterpillar’s next-generation Energy Control System (ECS) is a suite of integrated, connected and scalable controllers designed to allow users to manage energy needs ranging from a single generator set to full-site microgrid solutions linking multiple assets.
“As the energy landscape evolves, power systems are becoming increasingly complex, utilizing multiple energy sources and grid interfaces,” said Jason Kaiser, senior vice president for Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division. “The Cat ECS provides the integration, scalability and connected features to maximize power system performance while also simplifying specification, installation and operation.”
Models in the range include:
- ECS 100 – This value-added standby control system is available on new standby, gas fast-response and prime power gen-sets in select regions of North America. Features include intuitive, customizable, smart-screen navigation, enhanced programmable logic controller (PLC) functionality, four remote HMIs, auto-mains failure and an integrated annunciator function. The controller meets UL 6200 standards, which enables 60-Hz gen-sets to meet UL 2200 3rd edition, plus allows medium- and high-voltage configurations to be UL 2200 listed.
- ECS 200 – This controller is now available and adds gen-set paralleling capability along with product updates for advanced features, such as combined heat and power (CHP) system management, Balance of Plant control and grid upgrades.
- ECS 300 – This model (to be released in 2024 along with the ECS 400) will provide utility and distribution breaker control and can be customized to most applications, including tie breakers.
- ECS 400 – This controller will add on full microgrid asset supervisory control. For customers in North America, the ECS range also offers streamlined integration of power assets with the Cat Active Management Platform (AMP), a distributed energy resources management system (DERMS) that monitors, manages and monetizes on-site energy assets, including natural gas and renewable power generation, storage and microgrids.
The ECS 100 launched in October 2023, the ECS 200 has just now become available and the remaining portfolio models will be rolled out throughout the remainder of 2024.
