School Bus Maintenance & RepairAs a manager of a school bus fleet, you are responsible not only for the maintenance of that fleet, but for precious cargo. Kevin Houk shoulders the responsibility of managing West Franklin School District USD 287’s fleet of 18 school buses and 7 vans.

“Keeping a fleet of school buses in top condition means regular maintenance checks,” says Houk.

While reserve buses are maintained for unexpected mechanical issues, bus repairs are handled quickly. Students do not only need reliable transportation to and from school, but to events and extracurricular activities. Downtime isn’t an option.

Taking a proactive approach also means you can prevent problems from becoming safety hazards. Taking a proactive stance is crucial if you want to maximize uptime, keep your fleet running smoothly, and verify the safety of your buses --- and more importantly your drivers and passengers.

Houk noted that only when the pre-check has been completed and the requirements have been satisfied is the bus cleared to run their route. Post-trip checks are conducted on their return.

Houk says that he and his team of 14 drivers have daily, weekly and monthly bus maintenance checklists for both pre- and post- trips. While some of these inspection items are applicable only to school buses, all drivers can benefit by checking their vehicle before both long and short trips.

Walk-around visibility check. Drivers first complete a walk-around the entire school bus to look for any visible issues. They inspect the body for damage and ensure there is nothing loose, such as screws on lights, signs, signals, handles and tire lug nuts.

Lights & horn. Lights and the horn are both critical to safety and can not be overlooked. Drivers inspect connections and brightness as well as horn capacity. Many buses will have an automatic external light check the drivers can use without assistance while they are performing a pre-trip.

Wheels and tire pressure. Maintaining the proper tread and tire inflation is critical. In Houk’s district many routes are on gravel roads which makes tire pressure critical to aid in traction. Many buses will have a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), but daily visual checks as well as scheduled manual checks need to be performed.

Gauge and fluid check. Coolant, oil and other lubricants are given an inspection in the pre-check. Once the bus has left the lot, drivers keep an eye on the meters and gauges that measure temperature, pressure as well as speed.

Emergency & safety gear. Be prepared for anything. School bus drivers check to ensure they have adequate fire extinguishers, first aid kits, spare parts and emergency exit doors are clearly marked and in working condition. While many of these require an annual safety inspection, many districts make them part of their daily pre-check.

Managing a fleet of buses requires careful strategy. Everyday fleet managers must make decisions about how they will allocate resources. With so many children’s welfare at stake, safety and quality takes on a lot more meaning.
