State Technical College of Missouri Cat Dealer Service Technician Program

Program Description

Linn State Technical CollegeThe Dealer Support Department of Caterpillar developed the Dealer Service Technician Program. The program requires a partnership between Caterpillar, Caterpillar Dealers, and selected colleges. The program also requires a commitment by all three partners to assure program success.

The CAT Dealer Service Technician Program at State Technical College of Missouri is a two-year program culminating in an Associate of Applied Science degree. The CAT Dealer Service Technician curriculum consists of five semesters and operates on an eight-week block pattern. Typically, a college semester is 16- weeks long. However, the CAT Dealer Service Technician program breaks each semester into eight-week blocks. The first eight-weeks are spent in the classroom and laboratory, followed by eight-weeks of paid internship. The summer between the two years, the student is required to complete general education courses required of all Associate of Applied Science degree candidates. The curriculum is dedicated as Caterpillar specific and is differentiated from other industry-wide programs offered at the college. The paid internships allow the student to quickly apply what they have learned in the classroom while earning money to pay for the incidental fees, books, and tools required by the program. Financial aid is also available.
The CAT Dealer Service Technician option teaches students how to service Caterpillar equipment using:
Scholarships, Free Tools and Toolbox
Each Foley sponsored student is eligible to apply for a $1000.00 scholarship.  Sponsored students also receive required tools and toolbox worth $14,000.

Here’s what some past students have to say about the program and opportunity:

Jake Meyer, Technician

Foley Equipment
"I would highly recommend the State Technical College of Missouri CAT program. The courses are CAT specific with good training modules. What makes the CAT program stand out is what you don’t learn in the classroom, you do learn on your internships. Unlike other schools, this helps you get your foot in the door before you even graduate making it a smooth transition to becoming a full time technician. If I had to make the choice again I would definitely choose State Technical College of Missouri CAT program.”

Austin Huitt, Technician
Foley Equipment
“The Think Big program is an excellent start to a career in the heavy equipment industry.  State Technical College of Missouri begins with giving you knowledge on how each component in a piece of equipment works. This is done through the combination of instructional manuals and lab training giving you great insight on both operation and disassembly of each component. This is reinforced with excellent hands-on training by the dealer.  As an intern you are able to gain working knowledge of how a dealer technician takes the necessary steps to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair equipment so that our customers can get back to work as quickly as possible. I would recommend the Think Big program to anyone.  I don’t think there is any better start to gaining good knowledge and good experience as an equipment technician.”
